![]() “Come out, come out, wherever you are…” the man with lower voice practically sang the words. “Well, well, what have we here? Unmade bed…I think he’s hiding from us.” The second man, the one with the higher voice spoke. I could feel my heart beating inside of my chest so rapidly that I was afraid they might be able to hear it, but I prayed that they couldn’t. I kept as quiet as possible, my breathing barely making any sound. I gulped, terrified as they pushed my door open. “I think you’re right.” The second responded, his voice slightly higher, less intimidating, less frightening. “Something tells me we’re not alone.” One of the men spoke with a deep, low voice. I pushed myself back against the wall of the closet, hoping to god that they wouldn’t find me. My plans changed instantly, however, when I heard the sound of heavy footfalls on the stairs. I hesitated, listening carefully as I contemplated exiting the closet. For awhile, the voices subsided and I almost dared to think the men were gone. I brushed my hand through my shaggy, sandy brown hair and scooted back further into the closet, hiding behind my long winter coat. I crouched down, eyes squeezed shut, listening hard, hoping for the men to take what they wanted and leave. I fit easily, even with the clothes, as I was slender and at 5’7” fairly short for a male of my age. My heart pounding, I stepped into the closet. I slipped from the bed, pulling a sweatshirt over my shirtless body, not wanting to be hiding in solely my boxers. I took a deep breath, hoping that this would bode well for me. It struck me almost immediately that the intruders thought that they were in an empty house. My parents were out of town for the night, leaving me home by myself for the first time – at sixteen they finally trusted me in the house by myself. I woke the second the door creaked open and I could hear quiet whispers downstairs. It didn’t take me long to realize that someone was in my house. ![]()
